A single post from Toyota was enough to ignite speculation across the car world. Enthusiasts quickly connected the clues to the MR2, but once the reveal arrived it took a sharp right turn.
Toyota’s Mid Ship Tease Falls Short Of MR2 Buzz
Toyota revealed two customized Kei trucks on the first day of Tokyo Auto Salon. The reveal took place during an official press conference. Online speculation nearly blew a head gasket from all the buzz.
Gazoo Racing posted on X about a two seat, mid ship car. Many JDM fans linked that description to the MR2. The MR2 is known for its lightweight mid engine layout.
The timing of all of this mattered. Toyota has stated company wide that it must build cars people love. That philosophy applies to both performance and everyday vehicles.

Daihatsu answered that message with a challenge to Gazoo Racing to create the best Kei truck from each company. Daihatsu selected the Kei truck, Japan’s nationwide flagship vehicle for the concept.
The mid ship wording referred to the Kei truck engine layout led many to expect an MR2 return.
A Tale of Two Kei Trucks
The Gazoo Racing Kei truck is expressed as a rally-inspired machine built by a small garage. It focuses on fun, adventure, and shared outdoor experiences. The truck features four Bride seats in a 2×2 layout, with two inside the cabin and two in the bed.

The exterior wears a gunmetal grey finish and includes a bull bar, off road lights, a cargo net, and off road tires. Toyota described it as a playful, small garage style build designed for casual off road driving. Its personality leans toward a rally car, emphasizing enjoyment with friends over utility.

Daihatsu entered the competition with its own Kei truck, STAR CLIMBER, built to OEM factory specifications. The concept highlights work, hobbies, and disaster support, showing how Kei trucks are used nationwide in Japan.
It was developed by volunteers across Daihatsu teams, including designers, engineers, and planners, combining craftsmanship with practical creativity.
The STAR CLIMBER features two Bride seats, a light bar, bull bar, protective cages, cargo nets, and roof storage with shelving.

The body is finished in green with yellow tones, emphasizing functionality and durability. Daihatsu presented it as a serious, working truck that pushes the limits of factory customization.
Both Kei trucks are part of a direct competition between Gazoo Racing and Daihatsu, with fans deciding the winner. Visitors at Tokyo Auto Salon can vote for their favorite by dropping a voting ball at the Toyota booth.
Voting continues throughout the three-day event, with results tallied and announced after the show.
Toyota Signals More Surprises Ahead
The Kei truck reveal did not end Toyota’s announcements. An MR2 revival did not appear as many expected. Still, Toyota has more to show during the event.
Toyota revealed the GR GT concept last month. Fans can now see the car in person at Tokyo Auto Salon. It represents Toyota’s performance direction.

Toyota also teased another vehicle during the press conference. A silhouette suggested a competition racing Camry. More details are expected before the show ends.
Toyota continues blending heritage with experimentation. Tokyo Auto Salon remains a key stage for that vision.
