Pop-up headlights are officially back, and they are not coming from a factory showroom. A new body kit revealed in Japan has transformed the modern Toyota GR86 into something that looks straight out of the 1980s.
It is called the NEO86, and it might be the closest thing yet to a modern-day AE86 revival.
Result Japan Reveals the NEO86 at Tokyo Auto Salon
Result Japan, an aftermarket parts company, officially pulled the covers off the NEO86 body kit during the Tokyo Auto Salon, and it immediately caught attention from fans of classic Toyota performance cars.
Inspired heavily by Initial D and the legendary Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86, the NEO86 takes the current GR86 and reshapes it into a modern Trueno tribute.

The white and black two-tone paint scheme closely mirrors the original Trueno, while the widebody design adds a more aggressive stance that still respects the original shape.
The most defining feature is the custom pop-up headlight system, something rarely seen on modern cars. Result Japan integrated the headlights cleanly into a redesigned hood and front bumper, recreating the sharp and boxy front end that made the AE86 so recognizable.
The kit also includes front and rear bumpers, front fenders, side skirts, rear over fenders, door trim, and a ducktail spoiler. Black Watanabe wheels complete the retro look and tie the entire design together.

The full kit is priced at around 5,500 USD, which includes the pop-up headlight system and all exterior components. Result Japan wanted to keep the kit affordable despite how extensive it is.
Pre-orders are now open, with availability not only in Japan but also through US-based distributors, making it accessible to American GR86 owners for the first time.
The GR86 Takes The AE86 Formula But For The Modern Era
Toyota designed the GR86 with a philosophy that closely mirrors what made the original AE86 special more than 40 years ago. At its core, the GR86 is a lightweight, Rear Wheel Drive coupe focused on balance, driver engagement, and simplicity.
Power comes from a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated boxer engine that produces 228 horsepower and 184 lb ft of torque, paired with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

The car delivers strong performance without relying on forced induction, reaching 0 to 60 mph in about 6.1 seconds with the manual.
One of the GR86 strongest traits is its balance. With a weight distribution of roughly 53 percent front and 47 percent rear, along with a low-mounted boxer engine, the car offers a low center of gravity and predictable handling.
Lightweight construction, including an aluminum hood, keeps curb weight between 2,800 and 2,900 pounds, depending on trim.

A standard Torsen limited-slip differential sends power to the rear wheels, helping maintain control during spirited driving. The chassis features a sport-tuned suspension, with optional Sachs dampers and available Brembo brakes for drivers who want sharper handling.
Inside, the GR86 blends modern tech with a driver-focused layout, offering sport seats, an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and available safety features like Pre-Collision Braking.
A Modern Classic Meets a Special Year for Toyota and Nissan
The NEO86 body kit shows how strongly the AE86 legacy still resonates today. By pairing the GR86’s modern engineering with a design that honors Toyota’s past, Result Japan has created something that feels authentic rather than forced.

Tokyo Auto Salon this year proved to be especially memorable, with Honda, Toyota, and Nissan both delivering major headlines and exciting reveals.
Among all the new concepts and performance announcements, the NEO86 stood out as a reminder that classic design and driving purity still matter.
