The supercar landscape could be shifting on and off the track. Toyota’s surprise V8 Supra reveal at Bathurst has everyone guessing what comes next!

Toyota Unleashes the V8 Supra at Bathurst

Toyota stunned fans at the Bathurst 1000 with the reveal of its V8-powered Supra Supercar, confirming its full entry into the 2026 Supercars Championship.

The car runs a 5.2-litre quad-cam V8, built to Gen3 regulations, and will compete alongside Ford and Chevrolet. Walkinshaw Andretti United will field two cars, while Brad Jones Racing will enter four, marking Toyota’s first official shot at the series in Australia.

Toyota Unwraps Its Secret Weapon

The official debut came during the Bathurst 1000 launch in Sydney. Fans and media were treated to a fully built, track-ready prototype. This wasn’t the clay model teased in 2024; it’s the real deal, ready to roar and challenge the established grid.

Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s vice president of sales, marketing, and franchise operations, said: “What a fantastic day for Toyota, GR, and for Supercars. The race car we see here today is the culmination of years of planning and hard work from countless people, and it’s safe to say it was well worth it.”

The Supra has always been known for its silky inline-six engines, but Toyota swapped tradition for a 5.2-litre V8 to meet Supercars regulations. The decision shocked purists but signals Toyota’s intent: heritage matters, but performance wins championships.

Hanley added, “The GR Supra will make for an exciting addition to the Supercars grid next year, and we can’t wait to see it in action.”

Meet the Monster Engine Inside

The 5.2-litre V8 is tuned to deliver the grunt needed for Australia’s toughest tracks. Loud, aggressive, and balanced, it is built for podium finishes and intense battles with the grid’s incumbents. This engine is the beating heart of Toyota’s new racing era.

Toyota has already put the V8 Supra through its paces at the Altona facility near Melbourne, with Neil Crompton behind the wheel. The car felt raw and aggressive, yet controlled.

A full Australian testing program is scheduled soon, and fans will also see it publicly at the Bathurst 1000.

A Bold Step With Historic Impact

Toyota’s entry ends the recent duopoly of Ford and Chevrolet on the grid. With three manufacturers now competing, fans can expect rivalries to intensify and the championship to become more unpredictable. This is the first true three-way battle in Supercars since 2019, making the Supra’s arrival a historic moment.

Toyota isn’t entering alone. WAU and BJR are bringing six cars combined, switching from Ford and Chevrolet to join Toyota. Hanley said, “Participating in motorsport, as Toyota does across the globe, is an integral part of the development of our road cars, and the experience and knowledge we gain is at the heart of our TOYOTA GAZOO Racing brand and our GR performance cars.”

These strong teams provide experienced support, ensuring the Supra has the backing it needs to make a real impact in 2026.

The Future Grid Gets Hot

Toyota has deep motorsport roots, starting with the 1957 Mobilgas Round Australia Rally and growing through global competitions under Gazoo Racing.

The Supra Supercar continues this legacy, blending decades of racing experience with cutting-edge engineering for Australian fans.

By 2026, Supercars will see a fierce three-way fight between Ford, Chevrolet, and Toyota. Fans can expect louder rivalries, more intense battles, and a championship that promises to be messy, fast, and unforgettable.

Hanley summed it up: “I’d like to thank everyone at Toyota who helped make the GR Supra Supercar a reality, and to Supercars, Walkinshaw Andretti United and Brad Jones Racing for partnering with Toyota for this historic entry into the Supercars Championship.” The Supra’s arrival changes the game completely.
