Subaru Brings Back STI Excitement With The Sport# Reveal

Headlights on Subaru WRX STI Sport

Subaru is once again stirring up the STI conversation, and this time the spotlight is on a prototype that many enthusiasts thought would signal a full WRX STI return. The WRX STI Sport# prototype made its public debut in Japan, following weeks of cryptic social media teasers that had fans watching closely.

Subaru Expands Its STI Story At Tokyo Auto Salon

Subaru revealed the WRX STI Sport# prototype at the Tokyo Auto Salon, continuing a recent wave of STI-related news.

The unveiling follows a series of teaser videos shared on Subaru’s Japanese social media channels over the past few weeks, which hinted that something performance-focused was on the way.

This reveal also builds on Subaru’s earlier moves in October, when the brand introduced the Performance-E STI and Performance-B STI concept hatchbacks at the Japan Mobility Show.

Together, these appearances suggest Subaru is actively exploring multiple performance paths at the same time.

Subaru has not shared a timeline for when the WRX STI Sport# could reach production. However, based on its appearance and the road-ready look of both the Sport# prototype and the Performance-B STI hatch concept, it appears more likely that Subaru is aiming for availability sooner rather than later.

Nothing has been confirmed, but the designs do not resemble distant concept cars.

WRX STI Sport# Features and Early Specifications

Detailed specifications for the WRX STI Sport# prototype remain limited, but several key elements are already clear.

The biggest change is the addition of a six-speed manual transmission, which was previously only offered with an automatic gearbox. This aligns directly with the teaser clips Subaru released ahead of the reveal.

The prototype is powered by the same 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer four-cylinder engine found in the current WRX, producing a baseline output of 271 horsepower.

Subaru has not confirmed any power increases for the Sport#, but past STI models have traditionally received tuning upgrades over standard WRX trims.

Visually, the WRX STI Sport# features a more aggressive front grille design and a hood vent that reinforces its performance intent.

A red accent strip appears along the lower edge of the car in some images shown at Tokyo Auto Salon, though it does not appear consistently across all photos and may be optional. Unlike other STI models, the large rear wing has been removed on this prototype.

Subaru has not confirmed braking hardware or interior equipment for the Sport#. Features such as gold Brembo brakes and Recaro seats have appeared on other STI-focused trims and concepts, but they have not been officially detailed for this prototype.

Subaru has stated that more information will be shared if and when additional details are finalized.

Subaru Pushes To Win Back Performance Buyers

The timing of the WRX STI Sport# prototype reveal is not accidental. Subaru is clearly working to reenergize interest in the WRX lineup after a challenging 2025, when sales dropped sharply.

For 2026, the brand has already made aggressive changes by lowering WRX pricing and bringing back the Base model.

The return of the Base WRX at a starting price of $33,690 creates a more accessible entry point for new buyers, while higher trims and limited editions continue to serve enthusiasts looking for something special.

The combination of lower prices, expanded trim options, and visible STI development shows Subaru is serious about rebuilding momentum.

Performance remains a core part of the brand’s identity, and the WRX is still central to that mission as Subaru looks ahead to 2026.
