Toyota fans have been waiting for years to hear clear news about the return of the MR2. After months of rumors, teasers, and disappointment, new information finally confirms that the mid-engine sports car is coming back.
While it may take time before it reaches the road, the project is moving forward behind the scenes.
MR2 Revival Gets Official Green Light From Gazoo Racing
Gazoo Racing president Tomoya Takahashi has officially confirmed that Toyota is working on a new MR2. In an interview, he explained that the project is currently in the first of five development stages, a process that usually takes around four to five years to complete.

This means the new mid-engine MR2 is unlikely to arrive until near the end of the decade.
Interest in the MR2 began to grow again last November when Toyota filed trademarks for the name GR MR2, sparking major speculation that a revival was finally on the way.
Excitement increased once more ahead of the Tokyo Auto Salon, especially after chairman Akio Toyoda teased a midship two-seater vehicle.

When the event opened, fans were disappointed to discover that the teased vehicle was actually a Daihatsu kei truck rather than the long-awaited MR2.
Despite the setback, Takahashi later confirmed that the sports car project is still moving forward.
According to Toyota, this revival would not have been possible without the GR Yaris M Concept revealed last year.

That experimental model gave engineers a platform to test mid-engine packaging and performance. It also proved that Toyota could still build a compact and balanced sports car for modern roads.
The GR Yaris M Concept Shows The Future of The MR2
The GR Yaris M Concept plays a major role in shaping the future MR2. Toyota engineers moved the engine and transmission behind the driver’s seat, creating a true mid-engine layout. This setup improved weight balance and handling while giving the car a completely different driving feel.
At the heart of the concept is the new G20E engine. It is a 400hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine that can be mounted in the front, middle, or rear of a vehicle.

It can also be installed both longitudinally and transversely, making it extremely versatile.
Toyota expects it to generate more power than the current turbocharged 2.4-liter engine used in vehicles like the Tacoma and Lexus NX 350.
Over time, the G20E is expected to replace the 2.4 turbo engine across multiple models. Despite its strong output, Toyota is likely to limit the final horsepower in the MR2 to meet modern emissions standards.

The G20E is being designed to pass strict Euro 7 regulations without electrical assistance. However, Takahashi has not ruled out hybrid engineering, saying, “If we are going to mount this engine on many different vehicles, it’s almost mandatory to be able to combine it with hybrid technology.”
It is also possible that fans may have already seen an early preview of the future GR MR2. At the 2023 Tokyo Auto Salon, Toyota revealed the FT-Se concept, an electric two-seater coupe that was designed to explore the idea of a modern MR2-style sports car.

At the time, the concept was expected to help lay the groundwork for the model’s return, but Toyota later shifted its focus toward gasoline-powered performance vehicles instead of full electric sports cars
This means the future MR2 could remain purely gasoline-powered or receive hybrid support depending on regulations and market needs.
Either way, Toyota’s goal is to keep the car lightweight, responsive, and focused on driving enjoyment.
Toyota Continues Reviving Its Performance Legends
The return of the MR2 is part of a larger plan at Toyota. In recent years, the company has focused heavily on reviving and expanding its performance lineup.
Projects tied to the Lexus LFA legacy, the return of the Celica, and now the confirmation of the MR2 show a clear commitment to enthusiast vehicles.

By using platforms like the GR Yaris M Concept, Toyota is developing new technology while staying true to its sports car roots. The company is proving that internal combustion engines still have a future alongside electrification.
Although fans will need to be patient, the new MR2 is no longer just a rumor. When it finally arrives, it will represent both the brand’s history and its vision for the future.
