The next chapter of the Toyota GR86 has officially begun. For 2027, the automaker has introduced a series of updates that refine the sports car without changing its core personality.

2027 Toyota GR86 Gets New Color and Driver-Focused Updates

One of the most noticeable changes for the 2027 Toyota GR86 is the addition of a new color called Thunder. The shade appears as a light cement gray and can look slightly different depending on lighting conditions.

Toyota’s GAZOO Racing engineers also focused on refining the driving experience. The 2027 GR86 receives updated throttle calibration designed to provide a smoother and more linear relationship between accelerator input and power delivery.

Engineers also revised the shifter interlock between fourth and fifth gear for responsive downshifts.

Inside the cabin, buyers can now choose a new Cockpit Red interior on Premium models. The option combines black Ultrasuede and red leather accents, along with red floor mats and matching red trim pieces throughout the cabin.

Customers who prefer a more subtle look can still select a black interior featuring black Ultrasuede, black leather-trimmed upholstery, and black stitching.

Premium models also gain cast-iron black finishes on several controls and touchpoints for a more unified appearance.

Toyota also updated the GR86’s safety technology. The stereo camera system now has a wider detection range for improved adaptive cruise control performance, while a new camera helps spot nearby objects at intersections.

Power continues to come from the naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer engine producing 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque.

Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission. The available Performance Package returns with Brembo brakes and SACHS dampers for drivers seeking additional capability and control.

The 2027 Toyota GR86 is scheduled to arrive at dealerships during summer 2026. Toyota has not yet released pricing for the new model, but we do not expect a significant increase given these relatively small updates.

For reference, the 2026 GR86 started at $32,695 for the base model and $35,295 for the Premium trim.

FuelFest Bay Area Hosts the GR86’s First Public Appearance

The updated GR86 made its official in-person debut at FuelFest Bay Area on May 30 in Pleasanton, California.

The event brought together enthusiasts, performance vehicles, and automotive personalities from across the industry, making it a fitting location for Toyota to showcase its refreshed sports coupe.

Actor and automotive enthusiast Sung Kang was present at the GAZOO Racing booth during the event. Kang arrived with his famous red 1986 Toyota Corolla known as “Lola” and participated in a meet and greet with fans while promoting his upcoming movie, Drifter.

FuelFest attendees also had the opportunity to see Tyrese Gibson and Cody Walker, the brother of Paul Walker, who both appeared during the event. Their presence helped draw over 15,000 people.

With its updated styling, subtle performance refinements, new interior options, and continued focus on lightweight rear-wheel-drive fun, the 2027 Toyota GR86 stays true to the formula that has made it a favorite among driving enthusiasts.

While the changes are not dramatic, they show Toyota’s commitment to continuously improving the GR86 while preserving the engaging character that defines the sports coupe.
